The Challenge

The TAGA Student Chapters was established in 1985. The competition is for the grand prize called "Helmut Kipphan Cup". It is a competition were student chapters have to produce technical publications to showcase their student research in the graphic communication industry.

This student group has been participating as RYETAGA since 2007. As the name of the university was changed to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), the student chapters name was then changed to TMUTAGA. With this the branding of the student chapter had to change along with the creation of the 2023 journal.

The Idea: New Name, Same Journal....

The theme for the 2023 TAGA journal is "New name, Same journal". As we have rebranded ourselves with our new name and started this new journey, we wanted to show our viewers that we are still the same great student group. The journal’s creative response is to mix the old with the new to create an impactful journal. This was done by incorporating the following 4 concepts throughout the journal: (1) Something Old, which is our hard work and perseverance, (2) Something New, which is our new name and theme, (3) Something Borrowed, which are the student papers created by our GCM students and (4) Something Blue, which is our colour scheme and unique graphic element that ties everything together.

The Visual Aspect

Colour

This colour scheme was chosen based on it's impactful, bright and vibrant colour scheme

Font

For headings and subheadings Montserrat (Extrabold, Bold & Semibold) were used. Montserrat (Regular) was used for the body text. While Futura (Bold) was used for designing the cover page and Roboto was used for captions. The typefaces were chosen based on how they would look when combined together and based on readability purposes.
